Romer Hell's Kitchen, neighborhood hotel

851 8th Ave, New York, NY 10019, USA

4.0
The room was lovely and very comfortable and quiet. Hotel staff was friendly and efficient. Liked the lobby as a gathering place. Bit of an issue with one elevator (out of 2) that kept breaking down. Although it was fixed in a timely fashion, there could be a back up of people trying to move up and down the floors. However it really felt like you are nickel and dimed to death here. They charge you $500 upfront for "incidentals", which is refunded if not used. And, for an extra (daily) charge, you can request "upgrades" as basic as a room on a higher floor. BTW the upgrade charges are treated as separate charges so they then have taxes and fees added. The cost of the upgrade I requested more than tripled--which I discovered when I checked out. I made this reservation 4 months in advance, which was supposed to give a 15% discount but I noticed doing some checking a few days before our arrival that reserving a similar room for the same days on that date would have lowered my charges by $400 (including all of the taxes and fees). So where's the 15% discount for advance reservations? While I really liked the hotel itself, the costs would make me reconsider another stay. - L S

This hotel understands that even in the heart of the city, a peaceful night's sleep is paramount, and it delivers on that promise with comfortable and quiet rooms. Whether you're visiting for business, leisure, or a special occasion, Romer Hell's Kitchen provides a welcoming base to explore all that New York has to offer, making it a truly appealing option for locals and their visitors alike.

Romer Hell's Kitchen boasts an exceptionally strategic location at 851 8th Ave, New York, NY 10019, USA, placing it in the nexus of some of Manhattan's most iconic attractions. This neighborhood, Hell's Kitchen, is renowned for its vibrant dining scene, diverse cultural offerings, and unparalleled access to the city's entertainment hub. For New Yorkers or those hosting visitors, the hotel's accessibility is a significant advantage.

The hotel is incredibly well-connected by New York City's extensive subway system. Major subway lines are just a short walk away, providing quick and easy access to virtually every corner of Manhattan and beyond. This includes the A, C, E, 1, 2, 3, N, Q, R, W, and 7 lines, all converging within comfortable walking distance. This means getting to downtown financial districts, uptown museums, or Brooklyn’s vibrant neighborhoods is remarkably convenient. For those attending Broadway shows, the Theater District is literally a 5-10 minute walk away, allowing guests to enjoy pre-show dinners and post-show strolls without the need for additional transportation.

Beyond public transit, the hotel's proximity to major thoroughfares makes it easily reachable by taxi or ride-sharing services. For those arriving from out of town via Amtrak at Penn Station or regional buses at Port Authority Bus Terminal, both are within a very manageable walking distance, further enhancing the hotel's appeal for seamless arrivals and departures. The review highlights that the "Location is nearby to everything - 5-10 min walk to Time Square or theater district and down street from St Patrick’s Cathedral and all those things," underscoring its prime position for exploring Midtown's key landmarks. Despite being so central, the area around the hotel is described as "quite area and safe," which is a considerable benefit for guests seeking a peaceful retreat after a day of city exploration.

Romer Hell's Kitchen offers a range of services designed to enhance guest comfort and convenience, reflecting its commitment to a quality stay. • 24/7 Front Desk and Concierge Service: Essential for any New York hotel, ensuring guests have assistance and information around the clock. The review mentions "friendly and efficient" staff, indicating a focus on quality service.
  • Comfortable and Quiet Rooms: A core service highlighted by guests, ensuring a good night's sleep despite the urban environment.
  • Lobby as a Gathering Place: The lobby is specifically noted as a comfortable space for guests to gather, relax, or work, suggesting it's designed as a communal hub.
  • Elevator Access: While a recent issue with one elevator was noted, the presence of two elevators indicates a standard service for vertical transportation within the multi-story building. The quick resolution of the issue also suggests responsive maintenance.
  • Housekeeping Services: Expected for maintaining the "lovely and very comfortable" condition of the rooms.
  • Luggage Storage: A common and highly valued service in NYC hotels, allowing guests to store bags before check-in or after check-out.
  • Wi-Fi Access: Crucial for both leisure and business travelers.

Romer Hell's Kitchen stands out due to several distinctive features and highlights that contribute to its appeal, particularly for those seeking a comfortable and well-located stay in New York City:

  • Spacious Rooms: A significant highlight, as noted by a satisfied customer: "Rooms are so roomy. We had 4 adults with luggage so needed a decent size room. This room was amazing. 2 queen beds and lots of floor space." This is a major advantage in Manhattan, where hotel room sizes can often be a constraint. Providing ample space is a key differentiator, especially for families or groups.
  • Quiet and Comfortable Environment: Despite its central location, the hotel manages to provide "very comfortable and quiet" rooms. This is invaluable for ensuring a restful stay and is a frequent point of praise for urban hotels.
  • Prime Location Near Key Attractions: The hotel's address places it within a 5-10 minute walk of iconic New York landmarks like Times Square and the Theater District. It's also "down street from St Patrick’s Cathedral and all those things," making it an ideal base for sightseeing and entertainment.
  • Friendly and Efficient Staff: Customer reviews consistently highlight the hotel staff as "friendly and efficient," contributing significantly to a positive guest experience. Good service can elevate any stay.
  • Safe Neighborhood: The area is described as a "Quite area and safe," which provides peace of mind for guests exploring the city, especially during evening hours.
  • Lobby as a Social Hub: The lobby is specifically liked as a "gathering place," suggesting a welcoming and communal atmosphere beyond just a check-in point.

Based on the provided customer review, Romer Hell's Kitchen does engage in certain promotional practices, though some aspects might be perceived differently by guests. It's important for potential guests to be aware of how these are applied:

  • Advance Reservation Discounts: The review mentions a 15% discount for reservations made "4 months in advance." While the customer noted a discrepancy in the actual savings compared to later bookings, the hotel appears to offer incentives for early booking. It is advisable for guests to verify the exact terms and benefits of such discounts at the time of booking to ensure clarity.
  • Room Upgrades (with associated charges): The hotel offers "upgrades" such as a room on a higher floor. However, these come with an "extra (daily) charge" and are treated as "separate charges" with additional taxes and fees. Guests considering upgrades should clarify the total cost upfront to avoid surprises at checkout, as one reviewer experienced.
  • Incidental Holds: The hotel charges a "daily $500 upfront for 'incidentals'," which is refundable if not used. While this is a common hotel practice, the amount is significant and should be noted by guests planning their budget. This is a standard hotel policy to cover potential damages or extra charges like mini-bar use, but guests should be aware of this upfront hold on their funds.

It's always recommended for potential guests to thoroughly review all booking terms and conditions, and clarify any charges related to discounts, upgrades, or incidental holds directly with the hotel prior to confirming their reservation, to ensure full transparency and avoid unexpected costs.
